World Social Media Day: What Should You Be Aware Of?

World Social Media Day

Happy World Social Media Day!

Surprise!

Well, at least to me, it’s a very big surprise.

We’ve come to a day where even Social Media has a date of its own to celebrate, which shows how important it has become on a daily basis.

Social media plays a big part in redefining how we interact with the world around us.

The day was first established by Mashable on June 30, 2010. Until now, people still celebrate the event every year without fail.

The spread and impacts of social media on how people communicate are undeniable. From governments, VIPs, companies, celebs and of course, common people are using various platforms of social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.

With information being thrown around during this difficult time, WHO urges social media users to “pause – take care before you share” to mark World Social Media day and fight off misinformation.

"We are in a moment of global reckoning, from the pandemic sweeping across the globe to worldwide protests for racial justice to the climate emergency," the UN said on its website.

"Misinformation, hate speech and fake news are fueling and distorting all of the challenges. It acts like a virus. It exploits our weaknesses. Our biases. Our prejudices. Our emotions," it added.

Social media shorten the distance between people, but they’re also a platform for misinformation and hate speech disguised as “free speech” to spread.

“The thought that so many people get their news from social media is scary”, said Rush Limbaugh.

In this day and age, social media users must be able to select and dissect which sources of information should they follow and listen to.

Many influencers and people with authority are making use of the day to spread the message of positivity on social media.

Jaggi Vasudev, who is publicly known as Sadhguru, is an Indian yogi and author. He tweeted: “We have in our hands today the technology to communicate with the whole world. Whether we turn it into a boon or a bane depends on how consciously we use it. Let’s commit to becoming Conscious & Responsible users. Let us make it happen. – Sg #SocialMediaDay

Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot also wrote: “On #SocialMediaDay, our resolve should be to use this medium for the welfare of people, in disseminating information useful for them and to engage them in meaningful communication. Let’s use this medium in a positive way and empower people to gain access to information through this.”

We should also note that, without social media, many issues around the world wouldn’t have been addressed or even known of. Social networking sites give us platforms to raise our thought and opinions on different matters.

Access to education has never been easy because of social media. With just a few clicks and an Internet connection, we’ve been brought to different topics that we normally wouldn’t have been able to access.

Social media have and will always be a game-changer to how we interact worldwide. Globally, there were around 3.484 billion social media users worldwide in 2019, which is around 45% of the total 7.676 billion internet users all over the world.

And according to this research, the number of social media users can potentially reach over 4.75 billion in the next 5 years, which means nearly 6 out of every 10 people on the planet.
